If you’re from the Midwest, you won’t be surprised to hear that the temperature here has been going up and down like a bouncy ball. The week before Christmas we had six inches of snow and on Christmas day, we were outside in jeans and a t-shirt enjoying nearly 70* weather. Now the week after Christmas, the temps are dropping and the wind is howling, and it’s finally starting to feel like bitter cold winter is settling in. Last week Phill came home from work excited to share what he had harvested from the grounds of his office. Out of his lunch bag he pulled out a small container of mulberries.
Before he came home with fresh fruit to taste, my knowledge of mulberries stemmed from the nursery rhyme we sang as children “Here we go ’round the mulberry bush, the mulberry bush…” I had never seen a mulberry, or, frankly, thought much of them.

We’ve reached the end of August and summer is still going strong. Even though I’m longing for sweater weather, the extended heat is allowing our garden to continue thriving. After a slow start, our tomato plants have finally taken off and our kitchen is full of little orange globes bursting with summer sweetness.
Our cherry tomato plants, in particular, have taken over the garden. No matter how I try to support them, it seems they outgrow the space they’ve been given within minutes of being re-staked. These overgrown plants have given us dozens of tomatoes in the past couple weeks, and we’ve had to adjust our dinner menus accordingly. A summertime barbecue is not complete without a classic summer potato salad. Because, let’s be honest with ourselves, what do we actually want beside our bratwurst and burgers? Carbs, in potato form.
This past Saturday was a productive (and hectic) day for our family.Earlier in the spring I decided it would be a good idea to run a half marathon in the fall, which meant I had to run. for multiple miles. yikes! After a taxing, but fulfilling, five miles, we got to work on our list of “to do’s” including canning more strawberry jam, making strawberry and mango fruit leather, dehydrating limes for zest, and trying to figure out what pesty creatures were taking over my squash plants. Now that it’s really cold outside, I want to eat pasta all of the time. And, you know, I’m seven months pregnant so nothing sounds better than carbs and cheese.
This week we made lasagna – but we mixed it up a bit. We traded in your typical red sauce for alfredo and swapped out the filling for a creamy pea and bacon mixture.
